いつものようにアップデートの通知が来た。詳しく見ると、OSXのセキュリティアップデートである。私のMacのOSはHigh Sierraだ。全ユーザーに推奨されている。ということで、いつものようにリスタート・アップデートすることにした。だいぶ時間が経って、画面がリスタートの最後でフリーズしていることに気づいた。まずい・・・。これをずっと恐れてきたがその時まで起きなかったのだ。画面にはあのりんごのシンボルとローディングが終了していることを示すプログレスバーが出ている。もう暫く待ったが何も変わらない。
As usual, an update notice came. Looking into detail, I saw it is for OSX security update. The OS of my Mac is High Sierra. It is recommended for all users. So, as usual, I agreed to restart and update. A long time has passed before I noticed the screen froze at the end of the restart. Oh crap. I had been afraid of this and had never happened until then. The screen shows the apple symbol and the progress bar showing loading was over. I waited some time more, but nothing changed.
強制システム終了とリスタートを何度か試した。結果は、ローディングの最後の部分を始めるだけでそれ以上進まない。ううむ、新たしいマシンの買い時か?私が焦っているのを見て、妻も早く買わないからよと責める。
I tried forced shutdown and restart several times. The result was it restarted the last little part of loading and did not go forward. Mmmm, time to buy a new one? Seeing I was irritated, my wife blamed me I should have renewed the Mac.
もう買い換えるとしても、このMacがちゃんと動いたほうが良いだろう。スマホでネット検索を始め沢山のヒットが合った。大勢が経験しているようだ。
Even if I decided to replace the one, it would be better that the Mac would work properly. I searched the internet using my smartphone. There were a lot of hits. Many people had experienced this.
一番見込みがありそうだったのは、コマンド-r、コマンド-シフト-r、あるいはコマンド-オプション-rを押しながら再起動というもの。復旧ソフトが立ち上がるらしい。一番単純なコマンド-rを試した。リスタートは最初から始まったが結果は同じ様だった。どれをやったあとか覚えていないが、見慣れた画面が出た後偶然暫く待った時、OSXユーティリティのウインドウが画面に現れた。この方法の信頼性を疑いかけていたが、もうすこし待つべきだっただけのようだ。「OSXを再インストール」を選択したが無駄であった。画面は「再インストールサーバー」だか何かに接続できませんでしたと言う。「タイムマシンバックアップから復元」を試した。マックは長時間バックアップデータを探しているだけであった。
The most promising one was to restart with command-r, command-shift-r, or command-option-r. It looked like a recovery software would start by this. I tried the simplest one command-r. Restart began from the start but the result seemed the same. So, I continued trying the others. I don't remember after which one but when I waited several seconds after the familiar sight with no reason, there appeared OSX utility window on the screen. I was almost started the credibility of the process, but it was just I should have waited enough. I chose "Reinstall OSX" in vain. The screen told me it could not connect to a "reinstall sever" or whatever. I tried "recovery from the Time machine backup". The mac was trying to find the backup data for a long time without success.
その時思いついたのは、再インストールサーバーもタイムマシンデータもWifiの向う側にあるということだ。接続されているのだろうか? 画面のシンボルはグレー、繋がっていないということだ。また「再インストールサーバーに接続できない」と検索。単にWifiに繋いだという記事を見つけた。メニューバーのグレーのシンボルは信用できそうにもなかったが、半信半疑でクリックすると、Wifiネットワークのリストが表示された。うちのも含めて。
Then the thing occurred to me was both the reinstall server and the time machine data are over WiFi network. I wondered if my machine was connected. The WiFi symbol on the screen was gray meaning "No". So I searched again "cannot connect to reinstall server". There was a hit saying a man just reconnected a Wifi. The gray Wifi symbol on the menu bar was not promising, but I tried half-hearted click. It showed a list of Wifi network including one of my home.
素晴らしい、Wifiを繋ぎ、「OSXを再インストール」を再度試した。今回は処理が始まり、長〜い時間のダウンロード、インストールの後うまくリスタートした。
Great, I connected the Wifi, and tried "Reinstall OSX" again. This time it started the process, and successfully restarted after a long time of download and install.
嬉しいことに何も壊れていなかった。唯、アップデートを再インストールしなければならなかっただけ。今回は何事もなかったように終了した。
I was happy to find there was no damage at all except I had to reinstall the update again. This time it was over as nothing happened.

I'd rather do it with Mac やっぱりMacでやりたい

まだ、バイオリンの練習を平日は毎日やっている。もう一年を過ぎた。腕の方はジワジワだが、道具だけは色々発展した。
I am still practicing violin on every weekday. It has been more than a year. My ability is just slowly improving little by little, but at least my equipments have been evolved.
私のバイオリンは電子なので、単独では大きい音は出ない。始めの頃は、だいたいイヤホンを使って音を聞いていた。それから少し音質調整したくなったのと、それにイヤホンとバイオリンとつながっているワイヤが邪魔に思えてきた。
My violin is electric and does not make big sound by itself. First mostly I was using a earphone to listen to the sound. Then I want to have some tone control and started to feel the earphone and the wires to connect to the violin was bothering.
ということで、VOXのベースアンプを購入した。イヤホンワイヤに煩わされずに音が聞けるのはありがたい。それに、低音を大きめにしたり、ドライブをかけることも出来るようになった。
So, I bought a VOX base amplifier. It was nice that I could hear the sound without botherring wires. And I could increase base sound, or add some drive to the sound.
しかし、今日はアンプを使用しないで愛用のiMacだけを使って音が出せないかを調べていた。iMacだけといっても、それに繋いであるBoseのPCスピーカーも使う。
But, today I was exploring to play the violin without the amp using only my loving iMac. Only iMac means iMac and Bose computer music monitor connected to it.
まず、第一に入力した音をスピーカーに繋げなくてはならない。そして、その途中で信号の周波数調整や効果をつけられればもっといい。最後に、練習風景をビデオに記録できれば素晴らしい。驚くことにこれら全てほとんどがフリーのソフトでできてしまった。
First, I have to feed input sound to the speaker. And on the way it would be better to equalize and add some effect to the signal. After all, that is great if I can record video while I am practicing. Surprisingly all these were made possible by mostly free softwares.
LineInは不可欠だ。これなしでは入力信号をスピーカーに繋ぐことができない。非常に単純だが役に立つソフトだ。Hear はエフェクタ／イコライザだ。そしてこれだけは30日以上使用するのに$20が必要となる。本質的にバイオリンは高音を出すのは得意だが低音はどちらかといえば弱い。だから、イコライザは私のような初心者には大変助かる。 viJournal は基本的にBlogを作るためのソフトだ。そして、そのための一つのツールがビデオ記録だ。このツールは私には役に立つ。ScreenFlowというもっと高機能のツールがあり、これはビデオ編集能力もある。 しかし、これは少々お高い。Soundflowerは、システム拡張ツールでアプリケーション間でサウンドやりとりを設定できる。ダウンロードはしたが、どう使おうか見つけ切らないでいる。ちなみに、私は譜面を表示するのにも、チューニングにもiMacを使っている。ということで、もし全てのアプリを一度に表示すると、今の普通の画面は、これだ。

Hear is the effecter/equalizer, and only one I have to pay $20 more than thirty days. Essentially, a violin is good at creating high pitch sound and relatively weaker low sound. So, equalizer is very helpful for a beginner like me. viJournal is a basically a software to help creating a blog. And one of the tool it has is recording a video. That tool is useful for me. There is a more powerful software ScreenFlow that has video editing capability. But, it is a little expensive. Soundflower is a sysem extension that enable to to direct sound between applications. I downloaded this, but cannot find a place to apply this. By the way I am using iMac also to display scores and tuning. So, now the typical screen is like this if I try to display all the applications at the same time.

やっとうまくいった At last, I succeeded.

パソコンの動きが遅いのが気になっていたが、買って何年も経つのにこれに投資してもなぁと、だましだまし使ってきた。特にアプリを幾つも立ち上げたり、ブラウザでタブを幾つも使うと切り替えるたびに大変。アプリの終了ができなくなる。複数ユーザで使うなどもっての他。しまいにはログアウトもできなくなる。
I have been frustrated with the speed of my PC, but I have been trying to use it without investing more because it has been years since I bought it. It was hard to use especially when I used several application at the same time and used many tabs on the browser at the same time. Many times I was not able to quit application. It is out of consideration to log in by more than one users. Finally, to log out became impossible often.
一寸我慢の限界と感じ始めた。症状的に物理メモリの不足が原因のように思える。メモリ増設するかなと物色はじめた。
私のパソコンはMacintosh Series. MacPlusという古の機械を購入して以来、自宅ではMac Userだ。今は、iMacというのとMacbook proというのを使っている。今回メモリ増設するのは新しい方のMacbook。
I started to feel this is it. The symptom make me suspect it is because of lack of physical memory. I started to choose memory to increase the size of it.
My PC is Macintosh. I have been using Mac at home since I bought old MacPlus. Now, I have iMac and Macbook pro. It is Macbook pro that I was going to enhance memories to.
Appleのサポートページから適合するメモリのスペックを調べ、Amazonでメモリを注文した。1,2日してメモリが届き、このマシンをいじるのは初めてなのでドキドキしながら裏蓋を開けた。汚な!!空気取り入れ口やファンが埃だらけ。ついでなので、掃除機で掃除してから、メモリを入れ替える。蓋をして電源投入するが、何と立ち上げ途中で再リセットかかり、それを何度も繰り返す。差し込み方が悪いかと何度か試すが、ダメ〜。壊したかなとまたドキドキしながら元のメモリに戻すとこれは動く。一安心。また、新しいメモリにするがダメ。PROMリセットというのも試みるがダメ。
After I studied the specifications of the memory to buy at Apple support site, I ordered memory modules at Amazon. After several days the memories were delivered, and I opened the back cover of the machine with a thumping heart since this was the first time I opened this PC. Oh, mess! The air intake and the fan are covered with dust... Taking this opportunity, I vacuumed the area before I replaced memories. Installed the back panel, I powered on. Oh, f*** it kept on restarting in the middle of start up. Considering maybe the bad contact, I reinstalled the memories several times in vain. I was afraid I damaged the PC itself, and reinstalled the original memories to be relieved to see it worked OK. Trying new ones again did not work. PROM reset did not work either.
ううむ、初心に戻りもういちどAmazonのサイトを見ると、下の方の口コミの所に私と同じMid 2010のマシンでは動かなかったという口コミが２つ。ありゃぁ、いつも口コミはよく読むようにしていたのに、何でこれに限って読まなかったのか。トホホ・・・。
Mmmm, returning to the starting point and browse Amazon site again, I found out that there are two comments of users saying that this module did not work with Mid 2010 model that is mine. Oh, no. I usually read comments when I buy something, but this time I guess I was too careless.
兎に角使えないんだから返品しようと、Amazon返品初体験。これが思ったよりというか、驚くほどシステマティックにできていて簡単。購入履歴から返品をクリックすれば至れり尽くせりのインストラクション。電話すると日本郵便が取りに来てくれてオシマイ。こういうところはアメリカに敵わんなと思う。
Anyway, I decided to return the useless ones, and tried to return to Amazon for the first time. This turned out to be unexpectedly or surprisingly systematic and easy. You can find really kind and detailed instruction when you click "return the product" at the history page. The final action was only calling operator to send for Japan postal service to pick up the product. This kind of service, Japan is far behind the system of the US system.
返品が済んだので、このMacに適合するメモリを注文する。今度注文したのはこれ。

今朝もう届いたので、慣れた手順で新しいメモリを入れ、電源投入すると今度は無事にスタートした。メモリ容量を確認すると、このように8G認識している。
The product came this morning and I replaced the memory with ease, and powered on. Voila! The Mac started successfully, and I checked the installed memory with satisfaction.
